Dental Implants Timeline

People often ask how long it takes to get dental implants in Birmingham. We have done many procedures and we can offer you an estimate on the time it can take. One of the main things that affects the implant process is if you need bone grafting. When you have a tooth missing, bone in your mouth deteriorates very quickly. Bone loss happens twice as fast in areas with a missing tooth as it does when you have healthy teeth. If you are thinking about implants and you are missing a tooth, don’t wait to have a titanium implant base installed. You need to have enough healthy bone for the implant. Stopping that loss is important. Touch here to give us a call at (205) 979-0478 and discuss your needs. We are glad to answer questions.
The 3 Main Steps In The Dental Implants Timeline
- After your initial evaluation, we begin the first step, checking the amount of healthy bone. We need to be certain an implant can be placed properly without bone grafting. If you do not have enough healthy bone you will have bone grafted. The bone grafting procedure takes about 2 hours. The healing process takes about 90 days.
- The second step is where most people begin the process. Here, we place a titanium dental implant base. This step can be done in 2 or 3 hours. Then, the implant will be allowed to heal and fuse with bone. The healing period usually lasts 4 to 5 months. During that time, the titanium base will join with surrounding bone. Estimated Time = 120 to 150 days.
- The third step is to place a healing collar. That helps prepare your gums for the cap to fit comfortably. Two weeks after the collar is placed, you are fitted for a permanent crown. That crown attaches to the cap on the implant base. This visit is to mold and measure the cap, select the color to match your natural teeth and have the crown created in the lab. Lab creation takes about 2 weeks. Your final visit is when you have the permanent crown placed. Now, you have an implant that looks, fits, feels and functions similar to your natural teeth. Estimated Time = 2 visits, 2 weeks apart = 30 days.
Summary Of The Timeline

The time required to install dental implants can be cut in half when there is enough healthy bone to skip the grafting step. Most implants can be completed in about 5 months.
